The Gran Chaco Foundation is implementing the Indigenous Navigator Project in Chaco and Formosa, an initiative spearheaded by IWGIA and funded by the European Union that promotes the generation of community-based data to strengthen self-determination and advocacy on public policy.
The International Work Group for Indigenous Affairs (IWGIA), the leading international human rights organisation dedicated to promoting and defending the rights of indigenous peoples, has forged a strategic partnership with the Gran Chaco Foundation through the implementation of the Indigenous Navigator Project – From Data to Action: Realising Indigenous Self-Determination in the provinces of Chaco and Formosa.
The Indigenous Navigator Project is an international cooperation initiative that strengthens the effective exercise of indigenous peoples’ rights through the generation, management and use of information produced by the communities themselves. Under the ‘From data to action’ approach, it promotes the use of this evidence as a tool to strengthen self-determination, guide decision-making and drive advocacy processes in public policy.
As the implementing organisation in Argentina, the Gran Chaco Foundation supports the training of community leaders, the application of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC), the conduct of participatory surveys on biodiversity and community matters, and the uploading, validation and publication of information on the Indigenous Navigator’s international platform.
The initiative aims to increase the availability of reliable data on the situation of indigenous peoples, strengthen evidence-based advocacy processes, and promote the active participation of communities in shaping policies relating to human rights, gender, biodiversity, climate change, due diligence and the Sustainable Development Goals.
Through this partnership, the Gran Chaco Foundation is contributing its experience of fieldwork in the Argentine Gran Chaco to strengthen the capacities of indigenous communities in the production and use of strategic information, thereby helping to ensure that their priorities and perspectives are taken into account in decision-making processes and the design of public policies.
