This is a digital inclusion and regional development initiative that promotes access to information and communication technologies (ICT) in isolated communities in the Argentine Gran Chaco. Launched in 2013 as a local adaptation of Samsung’s global Corporate Citizenship programme, it is driven by Samsung Electronics Argentina, the Gran Chaco Foundation, the Avina Foundation and ACDI, alongside more than 30 local organisations.
Its aim is to bridge the digital divide through connectivity, digital literacy and the strategic adoption of ICTs, in conjunction with the region’s social, productive and cultural processes. Eighteen Nanum centres have already been set up in Salta, Chaco and Formosa, training over 600 people and reaching 30,000 residents.
The model is based on partnership-based management, community participation and the strengthening of local organisations—primarily indigenous groups and women artisans. The main challenge at present is to ensure the sustainability and self-management of the centres in order to expand their reach across the Gran Chaco Americano.
